What is Page Rank and is it Really Accurate?

Google Page Rank is pretty much just what it sounds like, a ranking system of web pages. The system is patented by the creators of Google and was created to “measure” a page’s relative importance. Google Page Rank is one way for consumers as well and partners that may have an interest in you to find out your web site value according to search engines.

Page Rank is the number of links to and from your website pages, and the respective page rank of the websites that are linking to you. There is much discussion as to the exact way page rank is configured however because Google will not reveal their exact formula for figuring out Page Rank but it involves an algorithm that uses a number of different criteria including standalone keywords, keywords in URL and reciprocal linking.

Page Rank is just one of many factors which determine the ranking of Google search results, but it continues to provide the basis for all of Google web search tools. Page Rank may not be entirely accurate however. The Page Rank concept has proven to be susceptible to exploitation, extensive research has been dedicated to recognizing falsely inflated Page Rankings and finding ways to ignore links from web pages with falsely inflated Page Rankings.

Many different tactics have been tried to take advantage of the Page Rank system to improve search results rankings and sell reciprocal advertising links. These methods have seriously affected the reliability of the Page Rank system, which is used to establish which web pages are actually highly valued by the Web community. Google will actively penalize link farms and other schemes that are designed to artificially inflate Page Rank. How Google identifies link farms and other Page Rank manipulation tools is another secret that Google will not divulge.

Because Google will black list your website if they think you are trying to manipulate the Page Rank system, it’s important to be careful about how you obtain links to your page. One way of gaining non-reciprocal or one way links (which search engines consider superior to reciprocal links) is by writing articles. Write unique content with as many relevant high quality one way links as possible back to your site. Non-reciprocal links from high Page Rank web pages are your ticket to the top of the page rank leader board.

While Google Page Rank may not be as accurate as they claim due to fraudulent linking activity, it’s the system you have to use in order to get high placing within organic search engine results pages. Be aware of the reciprocal and non-reciprocal links going to your page and stay on Google’s good side or you could lose all of the work you have put into getting your site more traffic.

Great post! Too many people put too much stock in Page Rank when there are many factors involved in ranking a site. On many occasions I have seen sites rank above other sites with higher PR.
