Sphinn It Plugin for Wordpress
Last week Danny Sullivan and his team over at Search Engine Land launched Sphinn. Sphinn is basically the new “Digg” style social media site for the search engine and internet marketing community. For a longtime the Digg community has shot down and shunned any type of submissions regarding SEO. Well ha Digg community, us SEO’s have our own Digg now, and I have to say it is much better!
Shortly after the launch of Sphinn, SquareOak made a great post on how to add Sphinn bookmarking to the “Share This” WordPress plug-in. Now, “Share This” is a great plug-in, but I prefer to promote a targeted social booking marking button directly on my posts. Why? It is targeted to your audience you are writing for, people can see right away how popular the post is, and if they like it all they have to do is hit the button and BAM another vote!
Now if you write about search engine or internet marketing wouldn’t it be nice (a song comes into my mind) to have your own Digg style “Sphinn It” button on every post ?
The answer of course is YES and I am proud to announce the “Sphinn It” Button WordPress Plugin! Thanks goes out to the programmer, Luc Ibata, from eVisibility who worked on this feverishly. I think that this will be a very useful tool for bloggers everywhere.
Sphinn Plugin Installation for WordPress:
————————————————-
To install Sphinn plugin follow the specific instructions provided by Luc Ibata.
Remember: BACKUP - just in case.
This version of Sphinn plugin Works with WordPress Version: 1.5 and WordPress Version: 2.0
You can download the plugin here, http://www.evisibility.com/upandown/sphinn_it.rar
1. Upload the plugin to the wp-content/plugins folder in your WordPress directory online.
2. Activate the Plugin:
3. Access the Plugin Panel in your Admin Panel
4. Scroll down through the list of Plugins to find the newly installed Plugin (if not visible, start from the beginning to check to see if you followed the instructions properly and uploaded the file correctly).
5. Click on the Activate link “Sphinn It” to turn the Plugin on.
I will work on other versions, for example the one which shows Sphinn after each post instead of at the top.

[…] Well now I heart the “Sphinn It Plugin for Wordpress“. […]

Tried the URL this morning and got a 404 error.
…and it’s not linked from the post which would make it easier for folks.
…and I hate my sysadmin because I don’t have software that can deal with .rar files on my PC…admittedly, this last point is my own issue to deal with…perhaps some Scotch might help that one…

Daune,
I have fixed the url! Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks for fixing the link, Stephen.
Great plugin. Easy to install, even for a PHP idiot like me.
Would it be possible to get a version that has graphics with a transparent background? It looks a bit off on my blogs background (although I’m leaving it up for now, as I want to support Sphinn).

I second the transparent png background request instead of the white corners. Many newer blogs use tons of color and it really limits where you can put it being only available in white. Transparent is best, IMO.

Brian Combs and eCopt - I concur with the transparent version of the logo. We will discuss this and add it to the to do list, so hang tight

Hey, Great Plugin, tried the update to the share this plugin, but as you said, i prefer to be specific about the social plugins…. just a quick question, i am no PHP fundie, how would i get the button to appear below the post instead of above?
July 20th, 2007 at 9:35 am
Pringlebrett, it is already on the to do list
We will let you know very soon.
Happy Friday!!

pringlebrett, you don’t have to know php or rely on the plugin to get it at the bottom of your posts…
Take a look at my page where it is in the Article Information near the bottom of each single post page, right aligned.

If you email me I can help you out with it if you like. You’ll see Sphinn is also in my bookmarks drop down menu and on my subscribe page.

Thanks for adding the transparent background Fumi, that was fast.

Actually, we have not had a chance to take care of this, I assume this was taken care of by the Sphinn crew

oh and this plugin would be so much better if it acted like the digg one shown here. http://tuggo.org/projects/diggit/
it allows you paste code into your template and thus you can put the button where you want.

[…] Thanks for visiting!Since my blog has a mix of seo and non seo posts, and I still want to post the Sphinn plug in button on them, I did a quick mod that only shows the “Sphinn It” button in the case […]

how do i put it at the bottom of the post?

Gasmoney,
Check out the fix by Scott Clark on SiteCreations:

How would get this button to appear below my posts?
January 11th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
I don’t like how the button isn’t transparent. It’s leaving a tacky white background on my black template. I’ll use the paste code button instead.

I wanted to simply put a Sphinn button on my “Sociable” plugin list as you have done but I don’t seem to have that option now that I’ve downloaded the Sociable plugin. Is this what you are using to get the Sphinn option (second icon on your “Share and Enjoy” list)? Thanks.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Delores,
I recommend you use the new sociable plugin that can be found:

Hi, nice plugin, i’m currently installing it myself. I would like to make a suggestion, and possibley ask that you put up a zip version of the file (and/or). Would make it easier for us that don’t have an rar archiver installed =)
thanks once again!

I’m back again to ask another question.
@ecopt, yeah, i had a look at the link, figured out how to add the code manually to the single.php file. However, i am probably trying to be more fancy than i should. On our blog, we have the flame logo beside the post title, which i have come to dislike terribly.
Now adding to the post themselves is easy enough, however, when adding the code to the index.php for the button to appear on the index page as well next the title looked easy enough, until having to make sure that when clicking the “sphinn it” button it submits that posts unique url is frustrating, i add:
submit_url = \”.get_permalink().’\';
However, on the index page, it wants to submit the main index page, instead of the unique post for each button.
Probably not the best spot to ask a PHP question like this, but any help would be appreciated.
